SEPTIC TANK REPAIR

OLDER TANK REPAIR

The majority of our work involves repairing older septic tanks. Generally the baffle wall is the first part of the tank to show signs of deterioration. If left unchecked, this deterioration process will allow the suspended solids to pass over the wall and enter the Septic Treatment Field. This is one of the leading causes of Treatment Field Failure. **SEE IMAGES

(Another common problem due to a failing Baffle Wall, is the sediment from the deteriorating wall is drawn into the septic pump, this sediment will jam the impeller, resulting in pump failure, causing a backup in the home..)

SEPTIC TANK REPLACEMENT

Replacing a septic tank is expensive and with the addition of decks, trees, shrubbery and out buildings, access is often difficult. It's rarely a good time for anyone to replace a septic tank, an inexpensive baffle repair, allows you the time to fit the tank replacement into your budget, or even to postpone it for years to come.

CONFINED SPACE CERTIFIED

The term Safety First, certainly applies to all of our repair processes at Arrow Tank Repair. Prior to tank entry, we perform an air test with an OSHA approved four gas monitor and continue to do so throughout the repair process. We use an OSHA approved tripod, retrieval winch and safety harness as part of our confined space safety gear. Our onsite employees are confined space certified. We have the equipment, training and procedures to perform the needed repairs in a professional and workman like manner. - Don't try this at Home -

GROUND WATER INFLOW

This is an expensive problem, groundwater entering a septic tank is not to be ignored, for one thing it is expensive. If it is a holding tank, the groundwater mixed with wastewater will need to be vacuumed out and hauled to a disposal site, which is expensive. If it is a septic tank, the extra flow into the tank will be discharged to the treatment field, often causing overload, resulting in premature failure, which is expensive. Also there is the very real risk of soil and groundwater contamination, which is very expensive.

In many situations the tank itself may be sound, but the the extension joints from the tank up to the  surface may be the reason for groundwater entry. Arrow Tank Repair has a cost effective solution to this ongoing problem. We can either inject these inflow points and seal them, or depending upon the severity of the inflow, we can remove the extensions and replace them with a “single piece of heavy duty extruded plastic extension”. The original cement lid would be replaced with a sealed fibreglass lid secured in place with stainless steel screws.

Problem: Ground water inflow through joints

Solution: Sealed the joints

HOW SEPTIC TANKS deteriorate over time

A conventional septic tank is comprised of the tank itself, with a Baffle Wall or (divider wall), that separates the Settling Chamber or (first chamber), from the Discharge Chamber or (second chamber). The Inflow Pipe from the house will enter into the settling chamber, as this chamber fills up  the contents settle out. The settling process is, the “sinkers” will drop to the bottom forming a sludge layer, the “floaters” or suspended solids will rise to the top forming a “scum layer”, the layer in between is called the “effluent”. As the level in the settling chamber rises, the effluent transfers by gravity through the Transfer Pipe, either a T fitting or 90 degree fitting, to the discharge chamber. This transfer pipe is located near the top of the baffle wall. Over time the baffle wall will deteriorate, in almost all cases the deterioration will start at the top of the wall, very often around where the transfer pipe is cast into the wall. The top of the wall is above the water line, making it susceptible to both age and to the toxic gases that are present in the tank. Another contributing factor to tank failure can be the type of water that the well produces, also water softeners can be a contributing factor to tank failure.

When the top of the wall deteriorates the floaters that have accumulated in the settling chamber, will then flow over the wall and be discharged out to the treatment field. This will significantly shorten the life of a treatment field, and is one of the leading causes of treatment field failure. Another common problem associated with a deteriorating baffle wall, is sediment from the failing wall is drawn into the pump, causing the impeller to seize, resulting in pump failure. Pump failure is a leading cause of septic backup into the home.
